School History

Izumigaoka Senior High School's roots date back to the Meiji period.
Before World War ll Japan's school system was very different from today. Five years of junior high
school education was provided for chosen students and high school education roughly corresponded
to today's college education. In 1893 Izumigaoka, initially named Ishikawa Prefectural Jinjo Junior High
School, was founded as one of such junior high schools.
After World War ll there was a major reform in the educational system. In 1948 the school bacame
Ishikawa Prefectural Kanazawa Dai-ichi Senior High School, which provided general course education
for boys. In 1949 the school name was again changed to Kanazawa Izumigaoka Senior High School and
co-education started, offering general, commercial, and home economics courses. The last two were
abolished some years later and then math and science course was added in 1968.
In 1993 Izumigaoka celebrated the 100th anniversary of its foundation as Jinjo Junior High School
and in 2008 the 60th anniversary as a senior high school.

School name was changed to Ishikawa Prefectural Kanazawa Dai-ichi Junior High School

1948

The major reform in the educational system was carried out.
Ishikawa Prefectural Kanazawa Dai-ichi Senior High School was founded.

 

 

1949

School name was changed to Ishikawa Prefectural Kanazawa Izumigaoka Senior High School.

 

 

1993

100th anniversary of Jinjo Junior High School's foundation.

 

 

2002

5-day school week was introduced

2003

Two-semester system was adopted.
Super Science High School (SSH) Status was awarded by Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, Culture and Technology (MEXT).

2008

60th anniversary of Kanazawa Dai-ichi Senior High School's foundation.

Academic Life at Izumigaoka High School
prepares students for the rigorous entrance
examinations of Japan's top universities.
Izumigaoka High School is one of the largest
high schools in the area and offers general
track students humanities and sciences
concentrations beginning in the second year.
In addition to a general course, a specialized
three-year Math & Science course is available.
Students wishing to pursue this course apply
separately.

 

Extracurricular Activities at Izumigaoka
High School range from the customary sports
and cultural clubs like baseball and brass band
to the traditional Japanese martial and cultural
arts. Students can choose from a wide variety
of activities. They generally continue one
club activity for all three years of high school
and develop a high level of proficiency as well
as loving and lasting friendships.
